1. Main facts and figures

• 83% of pupils finishing year 2 in 2017/18 met the expected standard for science
• pupils from the Chinese and Indian ethnic groups were most likely to meet the expected standard at 88%
• White Irish Traveller and White Gypsy/Roma pupils were least likely to meet the standard at 41%
• in every ethnic group, a higher percentage of girls than boys met the expected standard
• the biggest attainment gap between boys and girls, at 8 percentage points, was found among Black Caribbean and Black Other pupils
• in every ethnic group except White/Gypsy Roma, pupils eligible for free school meals were less likely to meet the expected standard than other pupils

Things you need to know

In 2017/18, 664,904 pupils were assessed for science in year 2.

Ethnicity was known for 99% of them. The broad ethnic breakdown was as follows:

• 75% were White
• 11% were Asian
• 6% were Mixed
• 5% were Black
• 0.5% were Chinese
• 2% were from another ethnic group

School level data is not published for key stage 1 subjects.

The Isles of Scilly and the City of London have only one school each. Their results are not included in local authority breakdowns.

This data only includes pupils in state-funded schools.

At the end of year 2, teachers assess pupils in reading, writing, maths and science. Pupils also take tests in reading and maths.

This data only includes teacher assessments, as schools don’t submit test data to the Department of Education.

What the data measures

This data measures the science attainment of pupils at the end of key stage 1 (year 2), when they are 6 to 7 years old.

For science, there is only one standard pupils can be assessed against, which is called the expected standard.

To reach the expected standard, pupils must have been assessed by a teacher as 'working at the expected standard'.

The ethnic categories used in this data

This data uses categories from the Department for Education’s school census. These groupings are broadly based on the 2001 national Census, with 3 exceptions:

• Traveller of Irish Heritage and Gypsy/Roma children have been separated into 2 categories
• Sri Lankan is included in the Asian/Asian British group but is not reported separately
• Chinese pupils have been assigned a separate category from Asian

These changes were made after consultations with local authorities and lobby groups.

Data is reported for broad and detailed ethnic categories. These are

The data shows that:

• 83% of pupils met the expected standard in science in 2017/18
• 88% of Chinese and Indian pupils met the expected standard (the highest percentage of any ethnic group)
• 41% of White Gypsy/Roma and Traveller of Irish Heritage pupils met the expected standard (the lowest percentage of any ethnic group)

The Department for Education uses eligibility for free school meals (FSM) as an indicator of deprivation.

The data shows that:

• in 2017/18, 69% of FSM-eligible pupils met the expected standard in science, compared with 85% of non-FSM pupils
• in almost all ethnic groups, FSM-eligible pupils were less likely to meet the expected standard than non-FSM pupils
• the exception was the White Gypsy/Roma group, where 43% of FSM-eligible pupils met the standard, compared with 40% of non-FSM pupils
• among FSM-eligible pupils, those from the Chinese ethnic group were most likely to meet the expected standard (at 80%)
• among FSM-eligible pupils, those from the White Irish Traveller group were least likely to meet the standard (at 34%)
• White Irish pupils had the biggest attainment gap between FSM-eligible and non-FSM pupils, at 25 percentage points
• White British pupils had an attainment gap between FSM-eligible and non-FSM pupils of 20 percentage points

• among FSM-eligible pupils, girls from the Chinese ethnic group were most likely to meet the standard, at 87%
• among FSM-eligible pupils, White Irish Traveller boys were least likely to meet the standard, at 30%
• among White British FSM-eligible pupils, 63% of boys met the expected standard, compared with 71% of girls
• the biggest attainment gap between FSM-eligible girls and boys was for pupils in the Chinese ethnic group, at 12 percentage points
• among Gypsy/Roma boys and girls, a higher percentage of FSM-eligible pupils met the standard than those not eligible

Summary of Science results for 6 to 7 year olds By ethnicity, area and gender Summary

The data shows that:

• for White pupils, the biggest attainment gap between boys and girls was in Slough (82% and 73%) and Salford (86% and 76%)
• figures for other ethnic groups are based on small numbers, so reliable generalisations can’t be made

8. Methodology

Key stage 1 data is submitted to the Department for Education by local authorities. Data was collected from 16,400 schools.

This data is matched to school census records to identify pupils’ ethnicities and free school meal eligibility.

The data only covers state-funded schools in England. This includes local authority maintained schools, academies and special schools but excludes independent schools and alternative provision.

Some pupils are eligible for free school meals (FSM) if their parents receive a qualifying benefit. We refer to these children as ‘FSM-eligible’.

In 2017/18, there were 91,163 FSM-eligible pupils in year 2.

FSM eligibility is used as an indicator of disadvantage. However, not all eligible parents apply for FSM and some families who do not reach the eligibility threshold may still be experiencing deprivation.

We refer to pupils who are not eligible for FSM or where eligibility is unknown as ‘non-FSM’.

Pupils with no valid key stage 1 outcome for a subject are excluded from the calculations for that subject. They do not appear in the number of eligible pupils or in the outcome percentages.

For science the valid outcomes are:

• has not met the expected standard
• working at the expected standard
• absent
• disapplied

Pupils with an outcome of ‘absent’ or ‘disapplied’ are included to ensure complete coverage of the cohort.

Suppression rules and disclosure control

Figures for the Isles of Scilly and City of London are suppressed as these local authorities have one school each. The Department for Education (DfE) does not publish school-level information for phonics.
