2. Things you need to know

What the data measures

The data measures the number of pupils in government-funded schools entering and achieving the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) by ethnic group.

The EBacc is made up of 5 GCSEs:

  • English
  • maths
  • science
  • a language
  • either history or geography

To achieve the EBacc, pupils need to get a grade 5 or above in each of these subjects.

Percentages are rounded to 1 decimal place.

The ethnic groups used in the data

Data is shown for the 18 ethnic groups used in the 2011 Census, with 1 exception:

  • there are separate categories for white Irish Traveller and white Gypsy and Roma pupils

Ethnicity was known for 98.0% of pupils.

Local authority data is shown for 5 aggregated ethnic groups along with pupils whose ethnicity was not known.

  • Asian
  • black
  • mixed
  • white
  • ‘other’

This means percentages are shown for these groups as a whole. This is to make sure group sizes are big enough to make reliable generalisations.

Data for the traveller of Irish heritage ethnic group is based on a small number of pupils and is less reliable as a result. This was 189 pupils in the 2022 to 2023 school year.
